SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATION
SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATION
+Gregor Mendel was an Austrian monk who had a keen interest in observing his garden pea plants in the early nineteenth century. His relentless work with the garden pea plants revolutionized the world of science in which he accurately predicted a heredity pattern in the next generation of the plant. The “Father of Genetics” left an everlasting impression. His achievements continue to be honored today in the studies related to evolution, heredity and genetic engineering.
Scientific observation begins with a keen sense of seeing and noting the growth patterns and changes in the world around us. One can get started in a small way. First take three pot planters filled with potting soil. Next get three different varieties of flower or fruit seeds. Then sow about ten seeds of each kind in the planter. Finally develop a sharp sense of watching the signs of growth on a weekly calendar taking care to distinguish each planter with a color-coded marker. Each variety will have its individual living processes for sprouting, germinating, branching, flower and fruit formation. Closely study and analyze the data collected and plot it on the graph to give a visual conclusion of the growth in plants.
