SCHOOL SENSE

School Supplies

         Every student is familiar with having the pencil pouch containing the basic necassities of classroom instruction for reading, writing and math work during the class session.  +Office Max, +Office Depot and other stationary supply stores display a good stock of desktop accessories to aid in creating impressive student portfolios.  The flash drive, compostion notebook, subject spirals,  notebook paper, index cards, vocabulary book, # 2 pencils, map pencils, pens and highlighters are the hallmark of a regular school supply list.  According to the article by NAPS, smartphones and tablets have become a common staple to advance learning in the core curriculum areas.  These technology aids can place a sensory overload on the visual and auditory senses.  The article mentions AOA recommendations and  provides age-appropriate tips to encourage optimum use of devices for the purpose of education and learning.
* Follow the 20-20-20 rule-take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and view something 20 feet away.
* Limit tech time to two hours or less.
* Adjust screen font size.
* Position devices half an arm's length away-slightly below eye level.
It is good to know the students' level of comfort in the technology area and make appropriate accomodations and modifications to ensure the appropriate educational use of the required gadgets and  devices.
